VersaFlash Flashing A Roofing Necessity

VersaFlash Flashing A Roofing Necessity

TRA Snow and Sun has something that every roofer needs: Flashing. It’s a must-have for all roofers. We call it the “roofer’s duct tape”.

The primary reason any type of roofing exists is to provide a protective layer to maintain a barrier between the interior of a building and the weather. How this is accomplished can take many different forms.  When it comes to flashing, there’s nothing proven to work better than TRA Snow and Sun’s flexible aluminum or copper flashing. It adheres to the wall or other roofing structure or tile, is extremely flexible, and adds a professional finish to all roofing projects while being extremely effective at sealing out water and preventing leaks.

VersaFlash and TileSeal are flexible rolled flashing that attach to the surface of the roof with butyl adhesive. Our flashing works like magic for many roofs especially around hard to flash areas! VersaFlash and TileSeal are extremely easy to use on the work site. You can use it in areas like around roof-to-wall abutments, around chimneys and pretty much everywhere else.  Plus, it’s competitively priced.

Simply put, TRA Snow & Sun flashing is easy to use, flexible and will save you time and money without sacrificing an inch in quality. There are many reasons you’ll love our Aluminum and Copper VersaFlash and TileSeal Flashing — but once you choose it, you’ll never roof without it again.

TRA Snow and Sun is your number one source for solar mounting, snow retention, flexible ventilation, and flashing material. We offer competitive prices and guarantee our products. Try a FREE SAMPLE of our VersaFlash! Give us a call today at 877-290-8669 for more details, and check out all of our flashing products at trasnowandsun.com.

Chimneys and Roofs – How They are Similar

What?  Roof Systems and chimneys the SAME?  You’re thinking, “No way, Jose!”  Okay, before leaving this post, give me just a second to explain.

smoking chimney

We at TRA Snow and Sun sell ventilated roof flashings and ridge risers which help with roof system ventilation.  No, we don’t want you to set them on fire thereby showing that roofs and chimneys are the same because of fire.

Chimneys are ventilation systems for the hot air and smoke produced in a fireplace.  Roof systems can also be ventilation  systems.  We’re not talking here about venting an attic, but venting UNDER the roofing product from eave to ridge.

Reduce Heat Losstile vent, roof ventilation

In a chimney, hot air rises because it is less dense than the colder air outside the building.  This causes a draft from low to high and out the top of the chimney.

For more information on why venting roof system is an excellent idea, see our previous posts – Why Roof Ventilation is So Important, Vent a Metal Roof? Absolutely, Why You Should Vent a Roof.

For both chimneys and roof ventilation, there are factors which affect the amount of draft produced.

  • The distance from eave to ridge on a roof or from the fireplace to outside in a chimney
  • The temperature outside compared to inside for a chimney and from the eave to the ridge on a roof.
  • Obstructions between eave and ridge. Design such as valleys, dormers, skylights, etc., will inhibit the venting of a roof system.
  • On the roof, the lower the slope the harder it is for a draft to form, therefore the duct size or opening below the roofing product must be greater on lower slopes.

Venting a roof system in a cold climate will help stop ice damming and in a warm climate will cool the house by helping prevent radiant heat from the sun getting trapped by the roofing product.

VersaFlash: The Roofer’s Duct Tape

ALL-AMERICAN AND PROUD OF IT!

TRA Snow and Sun is all-American and very proud of it!  Our colors, red, white and blue (with a little solar yellow thrown in!) were chosen for a good reason.

We believe and support the United States of America and all She stands for including the ultimate sacrifice made by those defending the values of America.  We’re American through and through, but we’ve traveled the world to obtain the knowledge and experience needed to provide the best engineered systems available anywhere!

American Eagle - Flag

TRA Snow and Sun was originally named TRA Snow Brackets when it was founded by Terry Anderson, the owner of Anderson Associates Consulting, in 1996. Although he had years of experience solving roof problems, it wasn’t until Anderson traveled to snow areas of Europe that he finally discovered how to prevent damage caused by snow and ice sliding off roofs. Learning that the European solutions were very different from standard practices in the US, he brought that knowledge back to America and was able to design Snow Brackets™ (also sometimes referred to as snow guards), and Snow Fences for all types of roofs as well as to help establish the concept of cold roof systems in the US.

TRA Snow and Sun’s Snow Retention devices have demonstrated great success in ski resorts such as Beaver Creek, Colorado, Sun Peaks in Canada and Grand Targhee Ski Resort in Alta, Wyoming.

Our Snow Retention devices were tested to a fail point by Brigham Young University’s Engineering Department. Using the resulting data, engineers created special charts to determine the number of brackets needed per roofing square based upon the roof pitch and the area’s snow load. Each job benefits from this focus on the specific factors of each roof.

TRA Snow and Sun expanded its product line to include Sun products when it was obvious no one in the solar panel attachment industry could provide the same service, engineering or value that is available with our snow retention products. The result is our Solar Mounting Solutions for solar panels. Available for all types of roofs, our Sun products reflect the company’s focus on engineering entire systems and focusing on each unique roof circumstance.

Visit our Solar Education Park just north of the manufacturing plant. There you can see how solar panels are mounted on numerous roof types using our unique Solar Mounting Solutions. The Solar Education Park also features two, very large solar tracking systems which follow the sun to obtain as much solar radiation as possible.

Another product line that was needed in the US was flexible roof flashing which can be molded to the shape of a tile, eliminating the weight and cost of lead flashing. Anderson established partnerships with suppliers and for several years partnered with others to provide roof flashings to North American customers. Now flexible roof flashings are available from his 100% American owned company – TRA Snow and Sun.

TRA Snow and Sun’s products help provide you with safety from the dangers and expense of sliding snow and ice, effective and cost effective mounting systems for solar energy collectors, and flexible roof flashing which have gained international recognition. Over 17 years, our products have been selected by hundreds of satisfied builders and property owners.

On a daily basis company owner, Terry Anderson, and his employees make sure that all customers get the help they need on each of their projects, big or small. What sets TRA Snow and Sun apart from others is our focus on engineering entire systems.

The engineering – it makes all the difference!

Don’t Void Your Roof Warranty!

When you install any product onto your roof after the roofing has been attached, you run the risk of voiding your roof’s warranty.  Roofing product warranties vary in length of coverage time and details on items included in the warranty.  It’s important to never do anything that will void it.

The type of warranty, material and labor, or material only, will determine what you should do before installing anything like solar mounting or snow guards.

Do you have a Labor and Material Warranty? This is the best warranty to have.  Generally your roof is warranted for a specified period against leakage or decomposition and the original installer was approved by the manufacturer.  The first thing you should do is call the manufacturer and let them know your plans.  They will send either the original roofer or another manufacturer-approved roofing contractor to you.  Your warranty will stay intact because you are using a contractor that the manufacturer has certified.

Do you have a product ONLY warranty for the roofing product?  You must comply with all specifications for the exact product.  Visit the manufacturer’s website or call them to obtain specifications.

Sometimes homeowners don’t know the brand or manufacturer and will intend to install various additions to their roof themselves.  The basic ways to not invalidate a warranty apply to both do-it-yourselfers and to professionals that manufacturers send to do the job for you.  Here are the basic guidelines.

  • Ifyou penetrate the roofing product with ANYTHING, it must be counter-flashed. This includes nails, screws, mounting brackets, snow retention devices, electrical conduits or cables – ANYTHING.
  • Counter-flashing is usually metal, conforming to the shape of the penetration or covering a fastener, and diverts the water away from the hole you’ve made. However, penetrating the valley will void all warranties, even if counter-flashed.  So NEVER put anything in a valley.

TRA Snow and Sun professionals are experts in solar mounting, snow retention and flexible roof flashings.  We design our products and engineered systems to be installed in a manner that will not void a roof warranty. Give us a call and we’ll help you with your roofing questions.

Why is Roof Ventilation so Important?

Just because your house does not include built-in roof ventilation does not mean that it is not important. Initially it may seem like an additional and unnecessary stress, but once installed it can make a huge difference in the lifespan of your attic and roof structure. Eventually, these installations will save you hundreds of dollars in repair costs.

The benefitsTile Roof

The ventilation process is beneficial in the extreme weather months throughout the year. During the summer the ventilation helps keep the temperature down in the attic, preventing moisture from collecting and deteriorating shingles. These lower temperatures then affect the rest of the home as well, keeping energy and air conditioning costs down.

Once it begins to get cold outside, the ventilation is still able to maintain a dry environment for the attic and reduce the moisture inside. Typically, water would build up under the shingles, the insulation would become damaged, and the roof structure would rot.

Ice dams

In addition, without roof ventilation your home may begin to produce ice dams on your roof. In areas of extreme cold, roofs need special protection from the ice and snowfall in order to prevent it from building up and blocking the natural flow of melted water off of the roof. If not installed these ice dams often start leaks inside homes which then results in drywall damage.

Save yourself more money and more headaches by installing roof ventilation today. You will be grateful in both the usually hot summer months and freezing winter months.
